Grafenwoehr, Germany — Command Sgt. Major Micheal D. Sutterfield is the new command sergeant major at U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria. In a military ceremony, responsibility was transferred from Command Sgt. Major Robert G. Todd to the new command sergeant major.
Garrison commander Col. Lance C. Varney thanked the out-going command sergeant major and his wife Amy for their service to the garrison and welcomed his successor. Varney talked about the historic tradition and role of the command sergeants major, calling them the backbone of the Army.
“Grüss Gott my German friends! Friendship is the greatest gift in life and you have given it to me,” said Todd, thanking the German guests.
The change of responsibility was attended by many host nation officials, including County Commissioners Thomas Ebeling from Schwandorf, Deputy County Commissioner Albert Nickl, Neustadt/Waldnaab County, Mayors Edgar Knobloch, Grafenwoehr, and Hans-Martin Schertl from Vilseck. Todd, the outgoing command sergeant major, also thanked Brig. Gen. Toni Aguto and Col. Clark Lindner for his time at 7th Army Training Command. The Todd Family’s new duty station is at Ft. Hood, Texas.
The change of responsibility was completed with the transfer of the garrison flag. The new command sergeant major, Micheal D. Sutterfield, comes from Ft. Rucker, Al. and was last assigned to 21st Theater Sustainment Command at Kaiserslautern, Germany. In his remarks, he asked everybody for their support and said he was looking forward to his new tasks in the garrison. Sutterfield is accompanied by his wife Kelly and his daughter Kayla.
